Collaborating In Isolation

What do three Doctors, a Nurse, Teacher, Conservationist, Civil Servant and a Dog Groomer have in common?

Music

They're all members of Disco Cactus No1 Funk Soul Sisters & Brothers!

This funky bunch started out as a couple of amateurs in the Wellington area looking for others to learn, play and practice with; it didn’t take them long to grow into an 8 piece group of drum, bass, strings, sax, rap and singers with a funky soul. Disco Cactus had been gigging and taking bookings for live events for a couple of years by the time of Lockdown 1.0

Not wanting to stop their funk, soul, disco party - the band swapped group practice for virtual sessions online

With most of the band member’s shifts being changed due to the pandemic, they often couldn’t meet online at the same time – so for some, it really did feel like collaborating in isolation.

Each musician practiced and recorded their section – using whatever recording equipment they had to hand at home – then the final file was emailed to the drumming Doctor who mixed each tune together.

I’ve chosen their cover of ‘The Revolution Will Be Televised’ by Smoove which was completed during Lockdown 1.0 because it is quite topical right now – click on it to listen, it got me up and dancing!

DiscoCactus are based in Somerset, in the Wellington area playing funk, soul and disco. Their public playlist is on Soundcloud which is free to access, download, and stream.

You also can follow Disco Cactus on facebook and visit their website for more content.

If you can relate to how Disco Cactus solved their own ‘no-time-no-location’ dilemma we’d love to hear from you.
