In need of a quick eco-friendly skin scrub? Just pour yourself a coffee!
A couple of weeks before the March 2020 lockdown, I was at the supermarket checkout [ten items or less], laying out my would-be impulse purchases of bread, Americano coffee-pods, tomatoes, one garlic bulb, a bottle of wine and I had just put the facial scrub on the line when a voice piped up, “You don’t need the scrub if you’re buying coffee.” I turned to the lady next to me and she said it again, this time pointing at the offending scrub.
You don’t need the scrub if you buy ground coffee because the used pod contents are a great exfoliator!
Myself and the checkout operator looked blankly at her, as she continued “I know it sounds odd but I just tried it one day because everything was promoting caffiene for skin and hair.” She did have very good skin, so I put the scrub aside and thought, I’ll give it a go!
Here is exactly what I did . . .
• Method: splash some warm water on your skin, put a small amount of used coffee grounds on your fingers and gently spread the coffee grounds in circular movements over your forehead, cheeks, chin and nose, then rinse.
• Notes: with any facial treatment be gentle and don’t over scrub delicate skin.

My Verdict
Using the coffee scrub, I have banished rough skin on my feet and dry, rough skin on my elbows as well – previously main problem areas for me. I’m saving a fortune and being eco with it! When I’m using the coffee grounds as a body scrub, I mix it in with my favourite shower gel [currently ‘creme brulee’ Possibilities – a very nice pressie] – I feel ready to face the world after that!
When travel restrictions were lifted in July and we were able to go camping again – to keep the electric count down, we use a moka pot on the gas stove – so now, instead of throwing coffee grounds away – I’ve been scrubbing up in the onsite showers to compensate for the water hardness! Another. Win. Win.
My skin loves me again!
I’m not saying this is for everyone, but if you think it’s worth a try yourself – let us know how you get on in the comments below.
